Curlee Wurlee vs. Mummy the Peepshow
Ik ging ooit naar de Waterfront in Rotterdam aangezien ik gezien had dat daar een japans dames bubblegumpunk bandje zou spelen, Mummy the peepshow. Dat leek me wel wat.
Er bleek ook een voorprogramma te zijn, van een zo mogelijk nog onbekendere band, Curlee wurlee. Uit Duitsland.
Nou, je raadt het al... Curlee wurlee was echt geweldig! Vanaf de eerste noot op het orgeltje van zangeres Cecile was het feest. Heerlijke, zoals ze het zelf omschrijven, 'frenglish pop'n'roll'. Mummy the peepshow was ook goed, maar lang niet zo als Curlee wurlee. Dat heeft echt een enorme indruk gemaakt. Was dan ook erg blij toen ik een half jaar later eindelijk het album in de brievenbus had liggen

Saw them in april of this year in Rotterdam in a small club. The singer is originally from
France and plays the Hammond. I had never heard of them (before) but I was in love with her and the music from the very first moment.

Curlee Wurlee "She´s A Pest" 2001 D LP 19.00 DM
Diese Band ist musikalisch deutlich vom 60s Franzosen Beat beeinflußt, lockert das Album aber durch Instrumentals im Stil der
MEN FROM S.P.E.C.T.R.E. auf. Die Sängerin trägt die Songs dann auch mit viel Charme vor, unterstützt von einer Band, die
geschickt flotten Bubblegum Punk mit 60s Garage vermischt. Ein sehr poppiges Album, das trotzdem nie flach oder gar langweilig
klingt. Tipp!

Magnifique album, rip off parfait d'une pochette des Ventures. Voilà enfin Curly Wurly, désormais
Curlee Wurlee, sur 33tours longue durée, après diverses compils, dont les deux précédents split EP
du Larsen zine!!! Ce LP est un excellent résumé du parcours fulgurant
du groupe franco-allemand (la chanteuse organiste est française, pour ceux
qui n'auraient pas lu les épisodes précédents...), entre pop punk et
sixties pop, toujours aussi frais, mélodique (l'hommage aux Calamités n'est pas
un hasard) énergique et fun! A voir aussi sur scène en attendant un EP sur Wiped Out.

"I was out in the sun drinking a refreshing?" WHAT??? Cécile, ma
chérie, votre accent est très drôle. Dis donc, ou est la bibliothèque?
Diese CD hat mir das Wochenende gerettet. Es war Freitag, die Sonne
schien, und Norbert und Anja hatten wie Millionen andere Deutsche
und vernachlässigungswürdige Exterritoriale nichts besseres zu tun,
als sich auf der Autobahn stundenlang in den Stau zu stellen.
Alles kein Problem, sofern man denn den passenden Soundtrack zur
Hand hat. Warum also nicht das Angenehme mit dem Nützlichen
verbinden und während der Fahrt, bzw. des Stillstands, diesen Berg
von Geschmax-Control-CD's abarbeiten? Dachte ich, Schlaumeier, der
ich nunmal bin.
Spätestens am Kreuz Kaiserberg sollte ich sämtliche CD's im
Schnelldurchgang gehört und meine Entscheidung bitter bereut haben.
Aber dann, wie eine Geschmacksoase in einer trostlosen
Wüstenlandschaft streetpunkoider Infertilität lag sie auf einmal vor
mir: "She's a Pest!" von CURLEE WURLEEE! Und selbst holländische
Wohnwagen begannen wieder zu rollen und die Sonne schien heller
und wärmer als je zuvor.
Was die crazed Kraut, Crêpe and Crumpet Crew hier abgeliefert hat,
ist schlichtweg die optimale Beschallung für den ausgehenden
Sommer. Farfisa-driven boss-frenglo-chick-pick-a-click mit hohem
Charme-Faktor, der allenthalben verschärftes hoofshakin' zur Folge
haben sollte, egal ob man nun eher den Klängen der POP TARTS, der
HEADCOATEES oder gar der MARIONETZ frönt. Sehr hübsch übrigens
auch die TOMMY JAMES & THE SHONDELLS- und
SPIDERMAN-Adaptionen. Deux, trois, quatre!

Retarded, scumbag roads, the cave 4, backwood creatures, reekys, dirthshakes,
apers, curlee wurlee... assieme in questo fichissimo lp compilation per la swindlebra
records.... otto bands europee con due brani a testa per una sfida punkrock...
La compilation, mi ha dato la possibilità di
ascoltare qualche nuova e valida bands che non
avevo ancora avuto l'opportunità di seguire...
the cave 4.... ad esempio suonano un fichissimo
surf strumentale..., si entra in sonorità più
rockarolla con i backwood creatures che, tra
l'altro sfoggiano anche una bellissima cover di
"two girls for every one"... i retarded e gli apers
li conosciamo tutti... di quest'ultimi da
segnalare una coinvolgente "do you remember
how I cried" mentre i nostrani ci sfoggiano
"tonight" e "there was a time" ... due songs di
buon livello nel loro classico stile..., il punkrock
velatamente poppettino dei reekys ormai sta
mietendo sempre più vittime... e la qui presente
"let's go to panama" li conferma una delle
promesse del punkrock europeo... mentre la
vera sorpresa mi arriva dalle Curlee Wurlee..
davvero grandissime... la voce della singer fa
paura.... sembra di sentire Creamy cantare
punkrock e il risultato è qualcosa di davvero
strepitoso.... anche la song live qui presente si
fa notare alla grande... mentre "pas de
panique" continua a girare sul mio giradischi... e
i fa venire la voglia di accapparrarmi tutto ciò
che han prodotto fin ora... Insomma... una compilation davvero valida che
vi farà alzare le chiappe e muovere il sedere...
con nomi fichi del punk europeo e con qualche
sorpresa che vale davvero la pena di
ascoltare... consigliato!

(Swindlebra; c/o R. Huber; Am Zeughaus 7; 89073 Ulm; swindlebra@t-online.de) Ich weiß nicht mehr, mit wem
ich mich neulich über Sampler unterhalten habe und darüber, dass viele von ihnen unter Ausfällen leiden und
dass man deswegen kaum einen öfters ganz anhört. Nun, nach dem 'Old Skars ...' haben wir hier
noch so ein seltenes Exemplar. Das Haus Swindlebra hat 8 heimische und befreundete Bands mit je 2
unveröffentlichten Stücken auf eine LP gebannt. Natürlich gibt's auch ein paar na-ja-Stücke, z.B. kann ich
den Reekys nichts abgewinnen, was aber vielleicht daran liegt, dass ich alle Ramones-LPs habe. Aber, wirklich
schlecht sind die nicht, so dass sie hier gut mitschwimmen. Das befeundete Ausland schickt die Retarded (I)
und die Apers (NL) ins Rennen, die Sauerkraut-Nation Cave 4, Backwood Creatures und die Dirtshakes.
Besonders gefallen mir aber Curlee Wurlee mit ihrem 'Pas de Panique' und die beiden Stücke der Scumbag
Roads. Deren 'Traitor' ist ein erstklassiges Punkrockstück mit einer guten Portion Hass und Melodie. Wie sich
das für einen guten Sampler gehört, hat er mich
angefixt, so dass ich mich jetzt um (...)

whack in relation to their population. Awesome power-pop/punk/rock’n’roll bands like the Cheeks, Dirtshakes, Sonic Dolls,
Embryonics, Jet Bumpers, Curly Wurly and many others ALL come from the tight and happening scene of Solingen, or "Hype City
#1" as the locals call it (also the name of a great all-Solingen band comp).
